How Much Net Worth Do You Need for a Provincial Entrepreneur Program in Canada?

·

Most provincial entrepreneur streams ask for a personal net worth between $300,000 and $600,000 CAD. Where you land in that range depends on the province and, in several of them, on whether the business sits in the big city or outside it. British Columbia's Base stream asks for $600,000; its Regional stream, for a business outside Metro Vancouver, asks for $300,000.

The figure is the easy part. Every province with an open stream has your net worth checked by an accounting firm it designates, and most look at how the money was built, not only how much is there. Below are the current numbers, where each stream stands this month, and what I check before a client pays for a verification report.

How much net worth each province asks for

These are the minimums on each province's official page as of November 2026. Investment is the amount you must put into the business itself, on top of meeting the net worth figure.

Newfoundland and Labrador International Entrepreneur

$600,000

$200,000, or $1 million in equity

Yukon Business Nominee

$300,000

Northwest Territories Business

$500,000 in Yellowknife, $250,000 outside it

$200,000 in Yellowknife, $100,000 outside it

Two former options are gone. Saskatchewan permanently closed its Entrepreneur and Farm pathways on March 27, 2025. Ontario's nominee program now says that the Ontario Workforce Priority stream has launched and all other streams are closed, which includes the old Entrepreneur stream. I explain what Ontario founders can do instead in my note on the closed OINP Entrepreneur stream.

A number on a form is not net worth until a verifier signs it

At the expression of interest stage you usually declare your own figure. After the invitation, the province sends you to one of its designated firms, and the firm's report is what counts. British Columbia says an authorized accounting firm will review your personal net worth and verify your accumulation of funds, and that this must happen before you submit. Manitoba asks for a verification of net worth and source of funds report within 120 days. Prince Edward Island wants net worth accumulated through legal and legitimate sources in your own right, and puts every cost of the verification on the applicant. Newfoundland and Labrador does the same on cost.

The provinces also decide what counts. Prince Edward Island caps business equity at 30% of the requirement and excludes loans and gifts. New Brunswick does not count gifts, inheritances or donations received less than 6 months before the application. Yukon requires that both the net worth and the liquid assets were obtained legally, documented through a Yukon accounting firm.

Here is the part I want every applicant to read twice. A borrowed amount, a recent gift or a property you cannot value with documents does not lift your net worth. It lowers your credibility, and the province decides on credibility.

What I check before anyone pays for a verification

I start with the whole balance sheet, not the bank statement the client is proudest of. Net worth is everything you own anywhere, minus everything you owe anywhere: mortgages, car loans and credit lines included. Someone with $700,000 in property and a $250,000 mortgage is below Base stream in British Columbia, whatever the deed says.

Then I follow the money backwards. If a large deposit landed last spring, I want the sale agreement, the dividend record or the maturity statement that explains it. If the wealth sits in a company, I want the financial statements and the share register that tie it to you. Gaps in that trail are much cheaper to close before the invitation than after it.

Finally, the net worth, the investment, the business plan and the experience you claim have to tell one story. If you say you ran a company for eight years, its accounts should show where your savings came from.

Where the streams stand in November 2026

Open on paper does not always mean inviting. Manitoba's Entrepreneur Pathway accepts expressions of interest by email, but its own page says draws for the Business Investor Stream are not currently being conducted. Nova Scotia's Entrepreneur stream is by invitation only. Newfoundland and Labrador says its expression of interest system is currently open, Alberta's Rural Entrepreneur stream is accepting expressions of interest, and the Northwest Territories Business stream takes applications first come, first served. Intake changes without much notice.

One federal change helps. Since March 30, 2026, subsection 87(3) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations gives the province sole responsibility to assess your ability to become economically established and your intention to reside there, and the officer's power to substitute an evaluation is repealed. Once the province is satisfied with your money and your plan, IRCC confirms the nomination and decides admissibility. You can see how the provincial and federal steps fit together in my 2026 guide to business immigration routes, and how I handle provincial entrepreneur files.

If you are already in Canada, protect your status first

The provincial route is long. You register, wait for an invitation, get verified, sign a performance agreement and only then receive the support letter for a C60 work permit, which an IRCC officer still assesses. If you are here on a post-graduation, spousal or other work permit, the expiry date sets the clock, not the provincial draw.

For a founder who already runs or is buying a business in Canada, the C11 and C10 work permits can keep you working while the provincial file matures. You can apply from inside Canada if you hold a valid work or study permit, and if you apply before your permit expires you keep maintained status while IRCC decides. A business with payroll, revenue and contracts carries these files. Read how I handle C11 work permits and C10 work permits, and how I choose between C10 and C11.

What I would do now

  1. Write down your global net worth with every liability subtracted, in Canadian dollars, and see which streams it actually clears.

  2. Gather the paper trail for every large deposit and every asset now, before any invitation starts a deadline.

  3. Check the province's own page for intake status this month, not last year's article.

  4. If you are in Canada on a permit with an end date, plan the work permit that keeps you here before you plan the provincial file.

This article reflects the rules as of November 2026.
